CHIDAMBARAM’s REGULAR BAIL PLEA DISMISSED BY DELHI HC IN INX MEDIA CASE

A Single-Judge Bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait on Monday dismissed the regular bail application filed by P Chidambaram in the INX Media Case wherein the CBI is investigating corruption allegations against the former Union Finance Minister.

The court stated that being a senior member of the Bar and former Union Minister, the possibility of Chidambaram fleeing from the investigation is minimal and so is the possibility of him tampering with the evidence as the same is now under the custody of the CBI and ED.

But, the Court was convinced that if Chidambaram is granted bail then he might influence witnesses of the case at this stage of the investigation as he is socially, financially and politically an influential and powerful person.

Chidambaram was represented by Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal, A.M. Singhvi and Dayan Krishnan whereas Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta was representing the CBI.

Mehta, appearing on behalf of CBI, thoroughly opposed the bail plea and argued that if the Senior Congress Leader is granted bail then he could tamper with evidence or influence witnesses. He further went on to say that economic offense and corruption charges should be treated in a different way irrespective of the punishment laid against the alleged offense committed by an accused.

P. Chidambaram was arrested on August 21 by CBI from his jor bagh residence and remained in CBI custody till September 5, after which, he was sent to judicial custody. On 19 September, a Special CBI Court had extended the senior Congress leader’s judicial custody till 3 October.
