Chidambaram alleges harassment by CBI and ED:Files plea in SC to stop ‘continued harassment’

New Delhi :Citing violation of his fundamental rights under Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution, former finance minister and prominent Congress leader P Chidambram has filed a plea in top court asking court to stop alleged violation of his fundamental rights by the NDA government. In his plea he has claimed that Centre under the NDA Government is misusing agencies such as the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to harass him and his family members.

Chidambaram stated that two of his houses one in Chennai and other owned by his wife and son Karti Chidambram were searched by CBI and ED in alleged violation of legal search authority vested with them. His son’s office was also searched in similar manner.

His son has been under investigation for alleged role in influencing Aircel Maxis and INX Media cases when Mr Chidambram was the Finance Minister. It is alleged there was corruption in grant of approvals by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) under the Finance Ministry during the UPA rule. Mr Chidambram has denied this and has said that “He considered recommendations for approval submitted by FIPB in the cases of Aircel-Maxis and INX Media and granted his approval in the normal course of official business.” He stated that in discharge of his functions, he “never allowed any member of his family, including his son, or any other person to interfere with or influence the conduct of official business. "

In his plea he has mentioned the dates on which searches were carried and further stated that no incriminating document was found during these searches. "No undisclosed money or valuable property or evidence of undisclosed assets was detected or seized during the searches. What is important is nothing of relevance to the subject matter of the investigation was recovered in the searches.”

He said the allegations made in the FIR by CBI against Karti in INX Meida case were “totally imaginary, farfetched and highly improbable.” The petition further states that “even on a bare reading of the FIR, it would be clear that the petitioner’s son has been deliberately drawn into a small, routine commercial transaction between two private companies for a paltry sum of Rs 10 lakh…” Chidambaram said that “it appears the Income-Tax Department has also been roped in to harass the petitioner and his family” over their coffee business.
