Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) launches e-Office to automate the handling of internal files

NEW DELHI: Mr. M Ajit Kumar, CBIC Chairman launched 'e-Office' at more than 500 pan-India central GST and customs offices. E-Office seeks to improve governance by automating the internal processes of file handling and decision-making within government.

Established by the National Informatics Center (NIC), the e-Office application allows online file-related work, beginning with obtaining and marking dak, running a file, preparing a draft document, authorizing and signing it, and dispatching the signed letter.

"The CBIC expects e-Office to complement its many other Information Technology-led reforms that are instantly intended to improve the trade and industry's ease of doing business," and it would provide increased security, as no file or document can be transformed or destroyed or backed up. An in-built monitoring mechanism would identify where the files are held for quick disposal and faster decision-making, an official statement said.

"This application will be used by over 50,000 officers and staff, making CBIC one of the largest government departments to automate its internal office procedures," the statement added.

The launch of e-Office is yet another step the CBIC has taken to optimize technology to provide indirect tax administration that is faceless, contactless and paperless. This will lead to more rapid decision-making, accountability and positive environmental effects by reducing the use of paper and printing. It will also prevent contact with physical files while preventing coronavirus transmission.

It would provide increased security, as no file or document can be transformed or destroyed or backed up. An in-built monitoring mechanism would identify where the files are held for quick disposal and faster decision-making.
