CBI court remands Karti to one day custody

New Delhi: Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram's son, Karti Chidambaram was arrested by CBI and sent to one day custody of the CBI. Karti is accused of receiving kickbacks related to approval of media house INX Media, when his father P Chidambaram was Finance Minister in the year 2007.

Karti was brought to Delhi after he was arrested in Chennai on his return from London. He was produced in CBI court in Delhi's Patiala House. The counsel for CBI asked for 15 days custody to question him, but the court allowed only one day of custody.

The CBI court saw heated exchanges between counsel of Karti Chidambaram, Abhishek Manu Singhvi and the CBI lawyer. Singhvi termed the arrest as “bizarre” and an effort by the agency to show its “bosses that (they) are doing some arrest”. Whereas the CBI counsel told the court that Karti Chidambaram was not cooperating and so was arrested. Singhvi argued that, the CBI had interrogated Karti for 22 hours on August 23 and 28 last year and whenever he was issued summons he fully cooperated with the agency and answered every possible question. He went on to argue that he is not a Hindustan leaver but a Hindustan returner. He was obviously referring to Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi, both of whom have fled India after they failed to pay loans back to banks.

Singhvi denied the charge of Karti receiving a sum of Rs 10 lakh as bribe, saying the said money was paid by cheque and proper TDS was deducted from it and besides the company in whose favour the cheque was drawn had no direct or indirect connections with Karti Chidambaram.

The CBI lawyer refused to supply a copy of the remand paper to Singhvi. However, the court directed the agency to share it with him.

Singhvi further argued that in the permission given to INX, there were six secretaries of Government of India who were involved but they have so far not been questioned. Karti is being arrested because he is a rival politician's son and he is being arrested on a mere apprehension that he travels abroad.

This was contested by the CBI lawyer, saying one of the witnesses in the case had revealed that Karti demanded $1million as bribe. “Thus, Karti Chidambaram needs to be subjected to sustained interrogation for unearthing the total conspiracy hatched in the case,” the agency said. He went on to say that his remand is also required to find out the details of overseas payments received by him from INX Media to help them in their permissions.
