Cauvery water sharing row: SC asks centre reasons for delay in implementation of its order

New Delhi: While listening to contempt plea filed by Tamil Nadu(TN) against Centre for delay in implementation of Supreme court’s February order on setting of Cauvery management board, the bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra asked the centre 'Why didn't the government implement our order?'

The court has asked the government to share a draft of water sharing scheme by May 8,2018.

The SC in its order given on February 16, had raised Karnataka’s share by 14.75 tmcft and reduced Tamil Nadu’s share. However it compensated TN  by allowing it extraction of 10 tmcft groundwater from the river basin, saying the issue of drinking water has to be placed on higher pedestal. As per the court order  Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Union Territory of Puducherry would be annually entitled to 404.25 tmcft, 284.75 tmcft, 30 tmcft and 7 tmcft of Cauvery water respectively, out of the total of 740 tmcft.

Earlier, the Center had filed a clarification petition before the Supreme Court and requested court to allow it to change the composition of Cauvery Management Board (CMB).In the petition Centre has also asked for more time to implement the order.

Cauvery water sharing is a huge political issue for states of TN and Karnataka. The politician tend to exploit the sentiments of the people on the issue and call bandhs and counter bandhs which lot of time turn violent. The Supreme Court has asked respective State’s  to maintain peace at all cost.

Meanwhile IPL matches which  are slated to be held in Chennai have also come under cloud as State leaders from DMK and AIIDMK have called for non holding of IPL matches in the city. New political entrants like Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan are also supporting such a move.
