Campaign to empower women through legal awareness launched by Justice Ramana

On August 15, 2020, Justice N.V. Ramana of Supreme Court, had launched a campaign to empower women, along with Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority. To celebrate India’s 74th Independence Day, both NALSA and National Commission for Women had taken joint initiative.

In this particular campaign, legal literacy project will conduct over 570 awareness programs within 285 districts of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. These awareness programs will be conducted with the sole aim to make women more knowledgeable regarding relevant rights and protections available.

According to Justice Ramana, the lack of education and legal knowledge also prohibits women from taking advantage of inclusive police forces. There is therefore a need for broad-based awareness-raising campaigns along with policy changes.

He said that women have traditionally been discriminated against on the basis of masculine ideologies, entrenched culture and norms. Nevertheless, with the liberalization and rejuvenation of women's rights campaigns, the role of women has shifted. With economic freedom and employment, women have a greater chance to compete with men in any sector.

According to Justice Ramala, various Legal Service Authorities across the country, are carrying out various legal programs for women. Approx 1.96 lakhs awareness program had held in the year 2019, and approx 2.68 crore people had attended that particular program.

According to Rekha Sharma, Chairperson of National Commission for Women, women's empowerment comes only from consciousness. Females cannot be motivated until they recognize their civil rights. NCW has been implementing legal education projects on a regular basis, but this time, in conjunction with NALSA, they have plan to reach out to women in every district, building legal awareness for people living in rural areas.
