Bihar shelter home case: Accused is obstructing the probe, must be shifted from Bihar, says SC

The Supreme Court while perusing the CBI status report on Muzaffarpur shelter home sexual abuse case today said that the main accused, Brajesh Thakur, should be shifted outside Bihar as he is highly influential and obstructing the probe.

The SC Bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur, S Abdul Nazeer, and Deepak Gupta expressed shock at the findings of the CBI report and said that the report reveals “shocking, horrible and scary” details of how the crime was committed.

It is very shocking. What is the Bihar government doing…Brajesh Thakur is a very influential man and is obstructing the ongoing probe,” the SC Bench said.

The bench further said that in view of the serious allegations made against Thakur and the influence wielded by him, it won’t be appropriate for Thakur to be lodged in any jail in Bihar and must be shifted outside Bihar.

The top court has, therefore, issued notice to Thakur seeking his response as to why he should not be shifted outside state – which the court said is necessary for a free and fair investigation which would not be possible if he remained in the state.

The Supreme Court has also asked the Bihar government and CBI to file responses as to why ex-minister Manju Verma’s husband Chandrashekhar Verma, who had close ties with Thakur, had not been arrested yet.
