Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-starrer 'Fanney Khan' lands in legal trouble

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s starrer ‘Fanney Khan’ has landed in legal trouble, as the film producer Vashu Bhagnani on Monday moved the Supreme Court to stall the film’s release.

Fanney Khan is slated to release on Friday, August 3.

The case was mentioned by Bhagnani’s counsel before the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice AM Khawhilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud, which posted the case for hearing on August 1.

In the plea, Bhagnani’s claims that his company Pooja Entertainment Films Ltd. owns the exclusive rights to distribute, exhibit and exploit the commercial and non-commercial theatrical rights for the film Fanney Khan throughout India.

He further said that Pooja Films entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the co-producer of Kriarj Entertainment in December 2017. As per the MoU, Pooja Films also claimed that it has deposited an amount of Rs 8.50 crores, out of an agreed Rs 10 crores payment. And as stated in the agreement, the remaining money need only be paid a week before the film’s release.

However, in connivance with others, the rights were parted with its entire co-production and distribution rights, the plea further stated.

Two petitions on the same case are already pending before the Delhi and Bombay High Courts.

The petitioner, Pooja Films, then approached the Supreme Court with a transfer petition, seeking transfer of their cases pending in Bombay HC to the Delhi HC or to the SC and stay the release of the film.
