233 TN courts to have video-conferencing facilities soon: Govt informs Madras HC

The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday told the Madras High Court that it had allotted Rs 22.83 crore for video-conferencing equipments in 233 court complexes across the 32 districts in the state.

The state home department made the submission before Justice T Raja during the hearing of a plea seeking a direction from the court to implement the SC order dated March 9, 2017, which mandated installation of such facilities in all the courts.

The plea was filed by H Ramakrishnan.

In his petition, Ramakrishnan has submitted that he was contesting a matrimonial case before a family court in Cuddalore. But since he stayed in London, he was unable to attend family court proceedings. Hence, he approached the Madras HC to direct the Cuddalore family court to get the video conference facility allowing him to record his court appearance from London.

When the matter was taken up by the court on Wednesday, the state home department submitted the affidavit and stated that the “government had allotted the amount for procurement of 233 video conferencing equipment and accessories covering 32 districts in the state in two phases”.

Justice T Raja then posted the matter for further hearing after two days.
