‘Love Jihad’ bill in Madhya Pradesh Assembly soon, five years jail for violators

On Tuesday, 17th November, 2020, Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Narottam Mishra had informed the reporter that a new bill known as ‘Jihad Bill’ will be introduced very soon, and it will include five years of rigorous imprisonment for those who will violate the rules and regulations of the said bill. Home Minister of Madhya Pradesh had also informed that, there will be a particular provision which will be declared as illegal if any case of forceful marriage by fraud and also forceful religious conversion etc. takes place. The Bill will also have a provision of informing the district collector, a month before the inter-faith marriage takes place.

Earlier Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh had said that, in the name of love, Jihad will not be permitted in the state and strict actions will be taken against love jihad. Chief Minister had earlier proposed that a new law against "love jihad" should be enforced and also stated that Article 21 of Indian Constitution guarantees right to a person to marry someone of his/her own choice.

This particular Bill has been proposed after an incident in which a 21 year old girl was shot dead outside her college campus. The family of the victim stated that the accused was forcefully trying to convert her religion and also wanted her to marry the accused. Earlier this year the Government told the Parliament that none of the central agencies had reported instances of 'love jihad' and that the concept was not specified by any current legislation.

According to the Union Minister of the State, the meaning of the term ‘jihad love’ has not been mentioned in any laws or statutes and no case of jihad love has been reported till now. The Union Minister further stated that Article 25 of the Constitution provides the right to believe, practice and promote faith according to public policy, moral and health.
