Refuses to hear Sabarimala review pleas, SC will now consider issues of discrimination against women in religions

NEW DELHI: Four senior lawyers were asked by the Supreme Court to convene a meeting on January 17, 2020 to decide on the issues to be discussed in the matter of discrimination against women in different religions and religious places, including Kerala's Sabarimala Temple.

However, at the outset, the top court made it clear that it did not consider pleas for review in the Sabarimala case.

The bench said it would consider mentioning petitions related to Muslim women's entry into mosques, female genital mutilation in the Muslim community of Dawoodi Bohra, and banning Parsi women married to non-Parsi men from the holy fire site in Agiary.

It said the Secretary-General of the apex court should coordinate with the four senior advocates, including Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta and A M Singhvi, to address issues.

The lawyers must determine whether to reframe the several issues referred to it by an earlier bench on 14 November last year, it said.

The bench said lawyers will decide who will deal with what problem after three weeks, and schedule the matter for further hearing.

"We're going to give this three weeks of time (deciding the issues) and then we're going to put this matter for hearing," it further said.

The bench said that it would not go into the specific details of each case such as Sabarimala temple matter and would go strictly by the November 14 reference order when determining the scope of judicial interference in religious matters.
