NATION IS CALLING FOR A STRIKE: BHARAT BANDH

The 10 organizations ' joint statement says that today there will be no less than 25 crore people participating in the protest. The strike is also endorsed by the left-leading farmer bodies. More than ten national trade unions called for a nationwide protest against the increasing impact of economic slowdown on employment, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), disinvestment, corporatization, and privatization policies. In many parts of the country, the two-day Bharat Bandh called by ten trade unions has disrupted normal life.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee : Won’t allow gundagardi in the name of strike. In West Bengal, intermittent violence and disruption occurred. Tyres were burned and there were many locations in Bengal where buses were vandalized. In several parts of the Bengal, the strikers blocked rail and roads, in addition to staging sit-in on railway tracks, affecting the sector's train services that affected normal life. Also affected states were Odisha and Kerala.

“About 1.5 million power sector employees and engineers, including 25,000 in UP, are on the boycott/strike which is a success," Chairman of All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF), Shailendra Dubey told PTI. They are also demanding the implementation of old pension scheme for all employees.

Traffic in Delhi remained largely unaffected, even as many trade unions kicked off day-long nationwide protest call on Wednesday's. Many trade unions had called a general strike on Wednesday, aligned with the Left parties and Congress. The nationwide Bhart Bandh appears to have failed to evoke much response in Maharashtra until Wednesday afternoon with transportation and banking services remaining largely untouched in many districts as well as in the financial capital of the country.

The central trade unions ' national shutdown call against the policies of the Centre evoked a mixed response in Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on Wednesday in the midst of rainfall. From anywhere in the states, there was no report of any untoward incident. Banking services also have been paralyzed in most parts of the country on Wednesday due to a day-long strike call by 10 major trade unions against the "anti-people" policies of the government.
