The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) today (January 16, 2020) has filed two fresh pleas in the Supreme Court over the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019  (CAA)

IUML cites steps by the UP Government to identify around 40k non-Muslim immigrants for grant of citizenship under CAA and asks for an immediate stay on the operation of the law.

The 2nd application cites contradictory statements reportedly made by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the Home Minister, Amit Shah and other union ministers over connection between NPR (National Population Register) & NRC (National Register of Citizens).

It wants the Centre to make a statement in the Supreme Court clarifying whether NPR is the first step towards setting up a pan-India NRC. The house in the matter is scheduled on 22 January, 2020.
