Law firms call for Vice President Pence to invoke 25th Amendment, remove President Trump

Nineteen law firms signed onto a letter to Vice President Mike Pence on Friday, urging him to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove President Donald Trump from office.

The letter was composed by Crowell and Moring LLP, a large international law firm with offices in Washington D.C. The letter stated that the firms had “watched in horror as the U.S. Congress was subject to a mob’s raid and occupation of the Capitol” on Wednesday afternoon, while Congress was certifying the Electoral College results. The firms called it the “direct and predictable result” of the president’s rally earlier that day, in which he repeated lies about the results of the presidential election. They asserted that “[i]t was a riot incited by the President’s own words addressing that rally, and then excused by his words after it.”

The letter notes that while lawyers are entitled to their own individual political views, “when it comes to defending our Constitution and our system of laws, we have a special duty and an exceptional perspective.” Calling the president “a reckless and wanton threat to the Constitution,” they asked the vice-president to work with the Cabinet to invoke section 4 of the 25th Amendment to remove Trump and to declare to Congressional leaders that the president “is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” The letter did not go so far as to ask the House of Representatives to begin impeachment proceedings, but Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has drawn up articles of impeachment and is urging swift action.
