International schools join mock court case project in Scotland

Schools in El Salvador, South Africa, Bulgaria, England and Germany have joined together to compete with Scotland in the School Mock Court’s first-ever international programme.

The project has turned the restrictions of Covid-19 into a positive opportunity for primary and secondary pupils worldwide to participate in the virtual competition.

With weekly online tutorials provided by law graduates, paralegals, solicitors and advocates, the programme brings together nations to engage young people with the legal system that affects every aspect of our lives.

The programme for the secondary pupils began successfully on 9 September 2020 and has scheduled virtual trials in November. In the next couple of weeks, the programmes for the primary pupils will also kickstart.

Coming up soon is the virtual speciality day with speakers from Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service, Police Scotland, Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service and NHS Prosthetics.

The mock court cases for this year are a complex personal injury case for the secondary schools and a more simplified contract dispute for the competing primary schools.

The project is a once in a lifetime opportunity for everyone involved and with the project growing each year, tutors and participants are always welcome.
